Updated Update from Tim Kjell, our GroupWise Sup-&Re-porter!
Do you remember Tim Kjell, the 17-year old Swedish winner of our GroupWise Wallpaper Contest (more info here)?
Here's an update from this interesting guy! | |
New: a few very Interesting Pictures added!
Dear GroupWise enthusiast,
Of course I'm interested in GroupwiseR and sure, I'll give you a
little update. First of all I just want to say I never imagined I'd get
fans, so I guess I have to say "Hello" to the fans, huh? Well, I
guess I'll start by giving you a short brief of what the trip was all
about. The trip was all about working as a volunteer on behalf of the
tsunami relief. |
|
The town I was working in is a town called Hikkaduwa, and because of it's location the destruction there was devastating.
That part where I lived was under construction, and even though
you could live there and go out in the evenings, you clearly saw
it had taken alot of damage. |
| |
But
if I walked about 2 kilometers north of where I lived, there was
nothing but debris. Some people have now rebuilt their houses so they
have places to live, but most of the people don't have anything at all,
but perhaps a couple of damaged photographs. As for the people who
doesn't have houses yet, they still live in tents and temporary houses,
and they have been doing so for over a year. Even though I didn't stay
for more than two weeks, I can tell you this much; The people living in
the south- southeast part of Sri Lanka are in serious need of help. |
| | The
governments of other countries have sent a lot of money to the
Sri Lankan government, but I don't think that's the right thing to
do. Because of a corruption and greed, these tsunami-money has not gone
to the people, but to highly positioned men in the government. So if
you want to help these people out, you can do it by giving money or
other gifts to organizations like the Red Cross, Unicef and so on.
While I was there, I met loads of nice people with different
backgrounds and nationalities, and I made so many contacts that are
going to last for the rest of my life. |
| |
For
example, I met a great photographer whom I worked with, taking pictures
of people who had lost their families and so on in the tsunami. We also
took peoples damaged photographs and retuched and edited them so they
became as good as new. This might not be the most important, you might
say, but we know it holds a great sentimental value, and we
thought we could spare two photographers to do these kinds of jobs.
Although that was one of the things I enjoyed most, that was the thing
I did the least. |
| | The
most work we did was painting just rebuilt schools, build wells for
water, and also we worked alot with building and rebuilding entire
houses and alot of drainage. Another thing that upset me quite a bit is
the fact that the people from UN lives in four- and fivestar hotels,
and I can't really figure out why so much money should be spent on
that, when they could rent a house for far less money. |
| | Anyway..
The trip went really well, and I successfully met my childhoodfriend
Frida Svensson on Heathrow. She worked alot with me down there as well.
So, to sum everything up, it was a great trip that I've really enjoyed
and it's been a great experience. |
| |
So that's a quick brief on the trip and I'm sorry if it's not a
that well organized text, but I have to work quite a bit with getting
myself together now for many reasons, so my mind's not as present as it
should be. Anyways, I hope you guys have a great time at the upcoming
GroupwiseR meeting, and I'm sorry I can't attend this time either.
|

Take care!
Tim Kjell
