The ICE-bear strikes back! |

GroupWise 7 was officially launched during the GroupWise EMEA Summit 2005 and the attendees very much appreciated the great GroupWise 7 Launch Party. But perhaps the biggest impact, at least in size, was made by the gigantic ICE-bear that was roaming around through the Kurhaus; actually, some of the speakers were even seen whispering in the ear of the ICE-bear :-)
We at GroupWiseR believe in GroupWise and we want to promote GroupWise as much as possible. Therefore we organize events like the successful GroupWiseR EMEA Tour and the GroupWise EMEA Summit and we do much more, together with Novell, the GroupWise partners and the GroupWise community.
We've all seen the success of the Linux penguin and although we don't expect the ICE-bear to be as successful as this mascot, GroupWise can certainly use a mascot. Have a look at some of the characteristics of a bear, it is recognized as:
- Friendly & cuddly
- Ferocious & intimidating when necessary
- Very strong and reliable
- Not to be bypassed easily
- A bear is a polar animal like the penguin

So why call it an ICE-bear?
What does ICE-bear mean? Well, ICE stands for Integrated Collaboration Environment and although in English these huge animals are most often called polar bears, in many other languages they are called "ijsbeer" or "eisbeer". So we decided not to call this mascot a "polar bear" but "ICE-bear" instead. This reflects that GroupWise is much more than e-mail alone, we think GroupWise is the most interesting Integrated Collaboration Environment of its time.
Who invented this idea about the ICE-bears?
The first idea to have a mascot for GroupWise came from Uli Neumann, the President of GroupWise&Friends in Germany (on the right on this picture). He started discussing this idea with Erno de Korte, President of the GUG-Nederland (on the middle of this picture) and together the created the concept of the GroupWiseR ICE-bear.
The people behind GroupWiseR envision that the ICE-bear could be an excellent mascot for GroupWise, much like the Penguin is being used for Linux. And the first responses of the attendees of the GroupWise EMEA Summit and the GroupWise 7 Launch Party were very promising: "Where can I get one?", much like what we've seen with the Linux penguin. |
